Support Urbanstead's Youth Plots With An Awesome New T-Shirt!

Urbanstead is currently a small start up non-profit organization entering its second year of program operation. In 2014, in partnership with Francisville Neighborhood Development Corporation, we began a gardening program that not only helps feed our youth but also encourages them to develop leadership and healthy decision making skills that will last a lifetime. With our first year showing just how much programs like Urbanstead are needed in Philadelphia, we hope to eventually expand, helping the community to build and maintain their own food production gardens and providing safe places for our youth to work, learn and play. These goals take work and support from our community. We need support from people like you.


In 2014 Urbanstead serviced 80 young people between the ages of 8 and 22 in our urban farm and orchard space. Through our Youth Plots program, youth participants learned plant botany, garden planning, garden construction, weeding techniques, pest management, proper use of farm tools, proper harvesting techniques, composting, and nutrition from the garden as well as social responsibility, food and health literacy. When asked by WHYY reporter Aaron Moselle what the garden has done for her, one of our youngest gardeners, Tatanique S, (age 10) responded “Working in the garden has made me like myself more.”

As we enter our second year of operation, your participation now is more important than ever.

We are raising funds to support our Youth Plots program and to further develop our farm spaces. Given the situation, even the most modest of gifts make a true difference. We accept all donations, big or small. Your donation will help us to achieve the goal of food security in Philadelphia. Your donations will not only help us to purchase seeds, plants and supplies, but will also be put towards creating successful garden and health education programs that will last for generations.

Our young people in the city face dangers on a daily basis such as weapon, gang, and drug violence. Our farm spaces and programming not only help to increase healthy options but also provide safe spaces for youth to work and play. We believe that farming in a city is the surest way to feed our children healthy food, become fiscally responsible, support a sustainable future, and build our community.
