About this campaign

Tango Time Machine is a unique investigation into the history of tango's Golden Age. Beginning in 1942, Buenos Aires's "El Mundo" morning newspaper carried one or more pages of lively, visually provocative ads for dances, radio appearances, new record releases, and other tango-related events. The ads are a veritable goldmine of information about the period, not available from any other source. Our research requires us to live in Buenos Aires for an extended period of time, and that requires dedicated funding. If you value this unique tango-related research, please support Tango Time Machine while enjoying our unique tango graphics on coffee mugs, aprons, calendars, DJ flip-books, and whatever else we can think of to entice you...

Spread-El-Mundo-23-September-1944jpgTwo years ago I saw a fuzzy, low-res image on Facebook. It showed a two-page spread of ads for tango and jazz events in Buenos Aires. Almost every major tango orchestra was represented there. From that very moment, I knew that a complete timeline of tango's Golden Age was contained in ads like that, and that I was born to find it, study it, and learn from it. On my next visit to Buenos Aires I began to examine the materials in the city's libraries, and I found that my original intuition was correct. The ads covered more than a decade of tango history, and were loaded with unique information about the times, the musicians, the orchestras, the songs, and the city itself! I have decided to dedicate myself to mining this unique resource.
