In September of 2013I was just a normal 2 year old little girl, but in one day all that changed.

My name is Savannah....I was recently diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a type of blood cancer. I started running a fever one day and my mommy took me to the doctor. They found what they were pretty sure was a spider bite, which would explain the fever. So they gave me meds to make it all better. A week went by and the bite was gone. My mommy noticed that I was still running a fever off and on along with not wanting to eat and being tried all the time. We went out for breakfast like we always do and I just wasn’t myself. I just wanted to lay in the play area and I was very pale. So my mommy called the doctors and back I went. They couldn’t find anything wrong but sent me to have some blood work done. Within 30minutes they called and said go straight to the emergency room right away. My blood counts: white blood cells, platelets, and hemoglobin were very low. So Off to the hospital we went. My mommy was very worried with no answers at this time. From Culpeper hospital they transported me to UVA hospital. They did lots of blood work there. We were there for a long time. My mommy was by herself because my daddy was in Florida trying to find a flight back here to be with us. Finally they sent me to a room! A nice doctor came in around midnight and told my mommy the news…”We believe your daughter has cancer and we believe its leukemia…but right now the most important thing is she needs blood transfusion” Since it was so late and there was no oncologist in until the morning to look at the slides they couldn’t say for sure but they were pretty certain. I had all the signs, along with my blood work I had an enlarged spleen and kidney from the leukemia cells building up. The news was shocking and devastating and a mystery. Why us? HOW? What did we do wrong? What’s next? The pediatric hematologist oncologist came in the next morning confirming it was leukemia and now we just needed to see what type it was. They would know more details once I had my procedures. I went in the next day and had surgery to have my port put in along with a bone marrow biopsy and lumbar puncture. I was a trooper. From these test they were able to tell us it was ALL: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. The duration of my treatment will last three years! During this time I will have bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures, and many rounds of different types of chemo, hospital stays, medicine to take at home, and more! This is going to be a long road but this type of leukemia has come the furthest with treatments and success rates. I am a feisty little girl and will be strong during this journey, especially with all my faith, family, friends and community behind me each step of the way!
