About this campaign

*** This shirt is a re-imagining of an extremely disturbing one on Amazon. It is intended to take that same disturbing scene and show how it should have looked. It changes the complacency into care. It's more of a counter-point to make the conversation constructive than it is for actual sale. But, any proceeds that do happen to be gained will be donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Shipping and sales are only available in the USA. ***

In early January, a series of products on Amazon were widely criticized for mocking suicide. Mostly shirts with images depicting and encouraging suicide, the very real risk of suicide contagion required urgent action.

An online petition for their removal gained over 50,000 signatures in only three days. In addition to calling for the removal of these dangerous products, the petition also called for an apology from Amazon and asked that they make a contribution is support of mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

Shortly after the petition launched, the offensive products started to be removed. However, as of this writing, Amazon had neither apologized (or publicly acknowledge the issue at all) nor offered to support mental health.

That's where this shirt comes in. The image used is a re-imagining of one of the more offensive products available on Amazon. In that image, a person sat back in a chair, casually eating popcorn, as another person hanged themselves in front of them. The words "Suicide Watch" were written below. To make fun of the very thing that stands in the way of suicide prevention - complacency - was not merely tasteless and unfunny. It was dangerous.

Here you will see how this image should have looked. Rather than sitting back thinking that the suffering of others doesn't concern us, we need to reach out. It doesn't matter who you are or what your background is, we can all reach out and help someone in need. Suicide prevention is everyone's business.

Because of the international nature of this campaign and petition, net proceeds from the sale of these shirts will benefit mental health awareness and suicide prevention for as wide an audience as possible.

Just like how we made online shopping just a little safer for survivors of suicide, if Amazon won't acknowledge or make this right... we will!

I tried to kill myself as a teenager. I was living with depression and anxiety, and it felt like I was the only one. When I started talking publically about my struggles, I quickly found out that I was not. I also learned some shocking facts about suicide that more people need to be aware of.

More than 800,000 people worldwide die by suicide each year. Globally, according to the World Health Organization, that's more than the death toll of murder and war combined. The biggest tragedy of all is that nobody has to die by suicide. Suicide is preventable.

Now it's more important then even to spread this message of hope. I speak to audiences all over about my past, but also my future. It's a privilege to meet so many others who bravely and intimately know these issues too, and who are standing up to be heard.

One relationship, one action at a time we're building a community of understanding, compassion, patience, and empathy. We're doing it together.

That's what prevents suicide.

Everyone is worthy of happiness and as the shirt depicts, worth fighting for. It's time to raise awareness about stigma so that we can stop it!
