Melvin had a great rookie year as a professional angler in 2013. He finished in 30th place for "Angler Of The Year" points in the FLW Everstart Northern Division and was the 3rd best angler from Maryland in the FLW Everstart Northern Division as well.



Shortly after he wraped up the FLW Everstart season. Melvin learning that he had finished 22nd place in the Walmart FLW Bass Fishing League Shenandoah Division "Angler Of The Year" points standings. After a shakey up and down season on both trails, the most exciting times came when it was announced that he had made it into the regional championship round on the Chesapeake Bay for the FLW Bass Fishing League.



This was fantastic news!!! A few weeks prior Melvin finished 21st place on the Chesapeake Bay during a FLW Everstart tournament and was confidant that his hot spots would still produce some nice bass. Then, the rookie blues came raining down on him, just as Melvin was starting to peak. He was in 16 place after day one of the championship and on to a serious school of largemouth bass heading into day 2 of the championship. He set out on day 2 with first place on his mind and tied into his 5 bass limit straight away. He was off to find some larger kicker fish when his 250 hp Mercury outboard engine would not get up on plain. 

Melvin never made it back to weigh-in on time on day 2 but found out after the fact he would have made the final days cut off with the weight he had landed earlier that day. As it turns out, his 250 HP Mercury outboard had found it's way full of fishing line, that caused the lower unit to have a catastrophic failer. Allstate insurance was nice enough to cover most of the several thousand dollar repair bill but left Melvin paying the cost difference out of pocket in late 2013. 

Melvin now faces a $1,500.00 priority deposit deadline on Feb 5th to guarantee his spot on the Rayovac FLW Series Northern Division trail and he is short on funds. If he misses the deadline, there is no guarantee that he will be allowed to enter the tournaments once it's time to fish them. The balance due after that is $3,000.00. For a grand total of $4,500.00 on the year. Travel, food and lodging expenses excluded. The first 2014 Rayovac FLW Series tournament on Lake Okeecobee, Florida had an incredible 226 boats fish the tournament. Up from the average of 150 boats per tournament. Making this Feb 5th priority deadline more important than every before.
