SMA AWARENESS

Cameron J. ("Cam") Williams was born on May 22, 2012, as a healthy 9 lb. 2 oz. baby boy. No symptoms of SMA were detected until he was almost 3 months old. Never will we forget those days in the hospital, feeling so confused and angry—yet strengthened by the social workers, case managers and our family and friends who made the long road a bit easier. No two days are the same with Cam; we have good days and emergency room days. He has a trach which is connected to a breathing machine 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We also have home health nurses in our home to assist in maintaining his daily needs around-the-clock. Because of the trach and him not being able to swallow, he has a lot of secretions that requires constant suctioning. He is fed through a tube in his stomach called a G Button; which is how I give him his medication as well. Life can be a bit challenging for Cameron as well as us as his family but we have managed to become his own personal medical team outside of the hospital in taking care of him...Because of our unexpected trauma, our mission is to bring awareness about SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) and other debilitating childhood diseases that affect every member of the household. We also want to equip the families of existing and recently diagnosed children with information about medical equipment, basic necessities, and compassionate support. Doing this fundraiser will mean a lot to us and Cameron in helping us to succeed at our goals. Thank You Very Much!
