Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths in Ohio
SIDS claims the lives of almost 2,300 infants a year in the United States. In Ohio from 2005 - 2009, there were 277 babies who died from SIDS. More boys died from SIDS (57%) and there were more SIDS deaths among black infants (22%) relative to their representation in the general population (51% for boys and 16% for black infants). In addition, 74% of the SIDS deaths occurred between 1 and 4 months of age. (Ohio Child Fatality Review Eleventh Annual Report). There were 28 SIDS deaths occurring in 2010*.
In Ohio, sleep related infant deaths account for more infant deaths (830 deaths from 2006 - 2010) than any single cause except prematurity. More than three infant deaths each week are sleep-related. 87% of these sleep-related deaths occurred before 6 months of age and 55% occurred before 3 months of age.
