Spring Round Dance
The Native American Student Association in conjunction
with the Jingle Dress Society presents:
Spring Round Dance: Celebrating Community in Iowa
April 14th, 2017, 7 – 11pm
University of Iowa Field House, Iowa City, Iowa
This event is free and open to the public. Round Dance in all its forms, ceremonial, memorial or non-ceremonial, is a celebration of community! Anyone can do this dance – which is a sidestepping motion in time with the drum, in line with any number of people, in a circle facing the center. It is a true friendship dance as everyone, including non-native, is encouraged to dance. At the heart of the round dance is love – for it’s purpose is to bring people together. Round dance songs have some lyrics in English and are often about love, romance, bittersweet heartbreak and native pride. Although it is an Indigenous based social gathering – it is welcoming, inclusive and family oriented.
Throughout the state of Iowa, there are over 15,000 Native Americans – about the population of Newton, Iowa. While we are mostly invisible as individuals, living as assimilated peoples within American society, we still maintain strong cultural heritage and community. Cultural outreach is one way of overcoming stereotypes and the negative effects of cultural appropriation, so that Native Americans may become visible, in a positive light, and our contributions to society be known. As we find ways to connect Iowans with their Native neighbors and inform Iowans about Native culture, we promote relationships based on mutual respect and understanding. The Round Dance is an excellent opportunity for people to take part in a Native American cultural event, as all are encouraged to participate. The event is always alcohol and drug free. All are encouraged to come and dance, Native and Non-Native alike. Family Friendly. Vendors will be on hand selling food, crafts, etc.
