About this campaign

Patuxent Lapidary Guild, Inc. is a non-profit guild working to teach jewelry skills to the public. We are working with very old, worn, donated equipment and need to upgrade the machines, saws, and hand tools needed for this craft. We are working to raise $50,000.00 to upgrade and help pay for our overhead renting an area large enough to accommodate the guild and continue classes. Your donation would be appreciated in helping us reach our goal.

PATUXENT LAPIDARY GUILD The Patuxent Lapidary Guild (PLG) was established in 1959 to promote the art of making jewelry using precious metals and gemstones. As a teaching organization, we offer classes in several jewelry-making arts: Cabochon cutting: In our basic class, students learn how to use the lapidary equipment in the PLG workshop to cut, shape and polish rock. Students may learn how to work with several varieties of rock, depending on the length of the class. Casting: Our introductory class focuses on beginning-level lost wax casting techniques. Students learn how to work with wax patterns, sheet wax and molds; how to prepare wax for casting, and how to cast, using both centrifugal and vacuum casting techniques. Silversmithing: Beginning students learn basic silversmithing techniques, including shaping, cutting, and soldering. Advanced classes are also available featuring specific pieces of jewelry or smithing techniques. Faceting: Students are taught the meetpoint faceting technique, and complete at least one faceted stone in a class. Precious Metal Clay (PMC): Students learn to mold and shape this clay and silver substance into beautiful jewelry. Advanced classes are also available to include setting gemstones in the clay. Other techniques: we also offer classes in enameling, chain maile, wire wrapping and beading.

We are dedicated to techniques of the jewelry trade. By purchasing a T-shirt you have helped us toward reaching our goal, thank you.
