Dear Friends & Family,
This summer I have been selected to join an international body of scholars and travel to South Africa. The organization I will be traveling with is calledONEHEARTSOURCE. One Heart Source is a nonprofit organization that gathers qualified representatives from universities around the globeto promote empowerment through education and positive social uplift.One Heart Source is a volunteer-led, humanitarian organization that believes in combatting conditions like poverty, disease, and illiteracy through education.
Duringmy two weeks stay I will be serving as a mentor, as well as teaching subjects such as reading, writing, and arithmetic tounderprivilegedstudents. The One Heart Source team and I will also engage in community development projects. It would be an honor to serve as your representative; thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.

‘Our Collective Struggle’(English)
More commonly known as“IY”or“Mandela Park”
Imizamo Yethu is home to an estimated25-35,000 peopleand is situated onapproximately18 hectares of land, which equals roughly44.5 acres. (THIS IS ROUGHLY 28 TIMES MOREDENSE (per acre)THAN THE CITY OF SF!)
Roughly 60% of residents in Hout Bay live in IY, and the majority of residents have little or no access to stable infrastructure, such as running water, adequate plumbing, electricity, and waste management. Despite the great social needs, there is an even stronger sense of community and hope amongst residents.

GREATNESSINITIATIVE FORTOWNSHIPEDUCATIONDEVELOPMENT
In 2012 One Heart Source designed and implemented a high-quality mentorship program known as the G.I.F.T.E.D. Community. Each year, we welcome approximately 20 new Grade 3 students and continue to work in close collaboration with the teachers and administration at local primary schools to officially enroll 66 students in the G.I.F.T.E.D. Community.
