About this campaign

Students of Michigan State University came together to raise money for National Immigration Justice Center, a non-profit org dedicated to helping immigrants and refugees! Protestors at Chicago O'Hare airport over the weekend sent out their thanks to NIJC for being on the ground trying to get refugees and immigrants out of airport detention. We wanted to show our appreciation for the continuous effort of defending human and civil rights!

On Friday January 27th President Donald Trump signed an executive order formally titled “Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into The United States this order is more often referred to as the “Muslim Ban.” With this order Donald Trump has entirely halted the immigration of Syrian people into the United States as well as put a 90 day ban on movement into the United States by people from Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, and Iraq. With this order the United States executive branch claims to be centering the safety of American citizens but has instead fostered dangerous conditions for Muslims and Immigrants domestically as well as alienated people living abroad. This order capitalizes on xenophobia and prejudice while also dehumanizing people living in this country by turning their countrymen against them. Telegraph.co.uk reports that the ban “completely suspends the United States’ Syrian refugee programme,” prioritizes the entrenece of Christian over Muslim refugees into this nation, and cuts the number of refugees allowed into the United States this year from 110,000 to 50,000(http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/01/29/everything-need-know-donald-trumps-muslim-ban/).

This bill is just one step of what could be a long journey down a road of victim blaming and fear-mongering. We are all people. Unique individuals, living in this country together. Our lives mix, and overlap. It is imperative that in this moment we stand to support fellow human beings as their dignity and their safety is threatened by our presidential administration. It is time for us as friends, allies, and intellectuals to support actions and efforts that fight to protect the rights of our neighbors and ourselves. We need to be showing up to public displays of resistance, and we need to be investing in organizations that can do more work then we can. The Heartland Alliance’s National Immigrant Justice Center works to protect the human rights of immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. They are supported by attorneys working pro bono(that is without accepting payment) to ensure access to legal support to more than 10,000 people a year with over a 90% success rate for winning asylum for individuals who have been pushed out of thier home countries due to persecution (http://www.immigrantjustice.org/about-heartland-alliances-national-immigrant-justice-center.).

Please join us in supporting their efforts.

These moves by Trump are ridiculous, illegal, insulting, racist, immoral, heartbreaking and embarraising. I appreciate what you are doing and this is one way I can fight back. Thank you.
