NIELS HAS MITOCHONDRIAL DISEASE.
BRETT GAVE HIM THE COURAGE TO TALK ABOUT IT.

http://www.mito5challenge.com/

Why does Niels have Diabetes?  Why does he see so many doctors? Why does Niels miss school? Why does he sometimes forget how to read?  Why is exercise so important to Niels?

The answer to all of these questions is found in two words... Mitochondrial Disease. Unfortunately, when Niels speaks these two words, none of his friends really know what they mean. None, that is, except for Brett.

Brett decided to do something unusual. When Niels said the  words "Mitochondrial Disease," Brett decided to fire up his computer, read, read, read, and ask questions. When the Fifth Graders at the Shipley School met to plan their community service projects, Brett whispered to Niels, "Let's do Mito."

For the first time in his life, Niels feels brave enough to openly talk about Mitochondrial Disease with all the kids in his school! Last year, Niels' mom gave a couple of speeches about his family's experience and their family introduced friends to Mitochondrial Disease through a fun video called "Soccer Niels." Niels chose not to talk about Mitochondrial Disease because it felt too scary, awkward, and complex to discuss. Thanks to the company, compassion and curiosity offered by Brett...

the two boys stand ready to spread awareness together!

To Niels and Brett, saying the words "Mitochondrial Disease," 5 times fast stands as one powerful act of friendship.
