Appalachian Sustainable Development was founded in 1995 and is committed to its mission grow food, communities, and opportunities to build a thriving Appalachia.  We work to preserve our land, forests and water systems for future generations. Our core work includes educating and sharing lessons learned on sustainable development locally, regionally and nationally to advance food systems and development. We advocate green building and the reduce, reuse & recycle business model. We love our community and work to educate children and youth to become environmental stewards, as well as to grow their own food and eat healthy. Appalachian Sustainable Development has multiple programs dedicated to our region that include Learning Landscapes, an outdoor classroom program at local schools which increases agricultural understanding and environmental sensitivity among our youth; WoodRight, which provides business opportunities for primary and secondary forest products manufacturers while ensuring the advancement of sustainable forestry practices; Appalachian Harvest, a food hub that connects small family farmers with large wholesale markets; and Rooted in Appalachia, a program to promote the use of local food, beer and wine in restaurants.
