About this campaign

Under United States federal law, students are guaranteed a right to an education free from sexual violence and harassment.

In the case that such violence does occur, colleges and universities are required to respond to the various needs of survivors, which can include: academic accommodations (e.g., receiving an extension on a paper after an assault), housing accommodations (e.g., moving your rapist out of your dormitory), and counseling services.

Despite these legal guarantees, schools continue to tolerate campus violence and mistreat survivors, especially those who have experienced intimate partner violence. Over 40% of college women who date report experiencing violent and abusive dating behaviors. These numbers are often higher—as are obstacles faced while reporting—for students who are queer, trans or gender noncomforming, people of color, with disabilities, Muslim, and undocumented. Furthermore, 1 in 3 high school students is a victim of abuse from a dating partner, a figure that far exceeds rates of other types of youth violence. Nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner every year.

Title IX protects college and K-12 survivors of all forms of gender-based violence, including dating and domestic violence, stalking, and harassment. Based on our own experiences, we know that students’ knowledge of these rights is an essential tool for ensuring justice. Survivors who “know their IX” can advocate for themselves when reporting violence, demand that their schools live up to their legal responsibilities, and push for campus-wide change that does not leave out victims of dating violence.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, join us in empowering students all across the country with the knowledge and tools they need to stay safe in school. All funds raised will go towards providing "Know Your Rights" materials and trainings. Whether you’re looking to help your child learn their rights, or want to show solidarity with survivors, you can rest assured that our soft, cuddly tee—and your contribution—will help us build in a world in which the cost of education no longer includes dating violence.
