About this campaign

Mathew Ajibade, known to his friends as Matt Black, died tragically and needlessly in the Chatham County Detention Center.  As the family works to get answers, the money raised by the sale of these t-shirts will be used to pay funeral expenses and help family and friends travel to Savannah for a memorial to celebrate his life.

Mathew Ajibade, known as Matt Black to his friends, lost his life on New Year’s Day 2015. Matt was experiencing symptoms of his bipolar disorder and his girlfriend requested that he be escorted to the hospital by police. Instead of being transported to the hospital, Matt was taken to county jail where he continued to experience symptoms of his bipolar disorder. After scuffling with police, he was charged with obstruction of justice, battery, and domestic violence. Matt was placed in an isolation cell and was later found dead upon the second routine check.

Matt was a Nigerian native, who grew up in the Maryland/DC area. He was also an artist, photographer, and designer studying at SCAD. He was a selfless person who stopped at nothing to help everyone. His contagious charisma and charm always kept his friends and family going. He was a creative genius in his own right, full of life, and always working on something new. Matt had a lot of life left to live and he will not get the chance to.

Matt was building a fashion company called Afridale, and this t-shirt features a representation of one of Matt's designs.  Through an organization he established called Made In Africa, Matt was working with companies in Africa to produce his fashion designs.afridale_1jpeg

Matt was a really good friend of mine in and after high school. One of the most cool, real, laid back and chilled people I have ever met. He didn't deserve this. I love you Matt!!! RIP.

I sat behind Matt in Bio class. We conversed occasionally. This guy was always happy. I remember him with the smile he wore everyday. To his family: I hope that the grief of having lost him doesn't replace the joy of having had him.
