About this campaign

Why Save Rhinos? With only 5 rhino species totaling 25,000 individuals, spread across Africa and parts of Asia, every loss is another setback in the recovery of the Rhino. Some of the largest numbers of remaining rhino occur in South Africa. So far this year (as of June 1 2013) over 394 rhinos have been killed in South Africa alone; that is a rate of 1 rhino poached about every 10 hours. Even with these losses, protection measures are helping species such as the white rhino and black rhino slowly increase with both populations up by 10% or more since 2007.

The American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK) sponsors an annual fundraiser bowl-a-thon called Bowling for Rhinos (BFR). Join zoo keepers and employees at one of two sessions for bowling and the opportunity to discuss the animals they care for. Over 60 AAZK chapters have raised more than $4 million since 1990 to support three conservation projects; including, Lewa Wildlife Conservancyin Kenya, the International Rhino Foundationand Action for Cheetahsin Kenya. Our efforts continue to make great strides in protecting the world’s rhinos, in addition to hundreds of other endangered plant and animal species that share their habitat.
