gil The most important composer of conscience spoken word music, Gil Scott-Heron was the voice of a generation. His ability to mix poetry and music pushed him ahead of all his contemporaries. His genius was being able to take the topics of the day, create a poem, which beame a song and te truth f that song; exploded in the minds of everyone who heard it. His popularity was that simple, he told the truth in a song. This was truth that everyone knew, however they never saw it on television or heard it on radio, until Gil Scott-Heron. “ The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” which was one of his poems, became and remains a cultural anthem. His love of mixing politics and music surely came from the early 1970’s; he lived and taught Creative Writing in Washington, D.C. at Federal City College, which became The University of the District of Columbia.
We have established the Scholarship in the name of Gil Scott-Heron at the University of the District of Columbia. It will help students study the work of Gil Scott-Heron. Currently, donors may give and designate funds to the Gil Scott Heron scholarship by going to www.udc.eduand click on Give to UDC.
