Who we are : Genesis Poets is a community collaborative of local poets, songwriters, producers, and community activist whose mission is to bring the love of poetry and performance to the residents of the District of Columbia. We achieve our mission through public engagement, creative productions and education about the contribution of DC poets to the national and local poetry scene. We produce the Annual DC Poetry Festival each year at the Carter Barron Amphitheatre, this years show is August 21, 2015.

gil The most important composer of conscience spoken word music, Gil Scott-Heron was the voice of a generation. His ability to mix poetry and music pushed him ahead of all his contemporaries. His genius was being able to take the topics of the day, create a poem, which beame a song and te truth f that song; exploded in the minds of everyone who heard it. His popularity was that simple, he told the truth in a song. This was truth that everyone knew, however they never saw it on television or heard it on radio, until Gil Scott-Heron. “ The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” which was one of his poems, became and remains a cultural anthem. His love of mixing politics and music surely came from the early 1970’s; he lived and taught Creative Writing in Washington, D.C. at Federal City College, which became The University of the District of Columbia.
We have established the Scholarship in the name of Gil Scott-Heron at the University of the District of Columbia. It will help students study the work of Gil Scott-Heron.
