About this campaign

Supporting this Booster campaign will:
1. Sponsor Middle School Students on a life-changing educational tour of the Galapagos Islands.
2. Enable Anchorage students and teachers to use the latest technologies in wildlife conservation and to apply that training to preserve Alaska's vulnerable ecosystem.
3. Help teachers and students better understand the opportunities and challenges of ecotourism, and assess and troubleshoot how it can both protect and harm Alaska's natural resources.
3. Support the participants in their effort to share with other middle and elementary school students their unique insight into conservation, restoration and environmental education.
4. Sponsor environmental stewardship throughout the Anchorage community.

After a rigorous application process, a group of twelve Goldenview eighth graders have been selected to travel to the Galapagos Islands to study its unique and vital ecology. While there, they will do field observations with renowned scientists that will include locating and monitoring adult tortoises using state-of-the-art technology, work on significant habitat restoration, and participate in cultural exchanges with local students to discuss, among other things, strategies for conservation in world regions that rely on ecotourism. Upon return from their two week working, educational trip, the Goldenview students will develop and teach science ecology lessons, including their knowledge of leading edge conservation technology, to other eighth grade students, as well as sixth grade classes throughout the Anchorage School District.
