Free The Donkeys!

About this campaign

Like many horses, donkeys, and mules in the world, those in Ethiopia haul very heavy loads of goods several miles to reach market areas where their owners will sell those goods to support their families. By the time the animals arrive at market, they are often exhausted, dehydrated, and hungry. Under normal circumstances, those animals would stand in the blazing African sun all day, without shade, water, or food, until the unsold goods had to be carried home again at night.

Brooke USA's "Free The Donkeys!" campaign will raise funds to construct massive shade shelters for working equines in Ethiopia, in market areas where thousands of horses, donkeys, and mules congregate. The shade shelters will provide relief from the sun, while also allowing these very tired animals to have water, food, and rest, while their owners sell their goods at market.

Each shade shelter can hold up to 500 animals a day.

The shade shelters that Brooke has already constructed and are in use in other areas of Ethiopia have proven to be very successful in alleviating the suffering and lowering the mortality rates of the animals who use them.
