About this campaign

Martha's Story: Martha has been a para educator (teacher's aid) for Longfellow Elementary for 32 years. She has spent those years helping kids learn English, with their reading and math skills, and making sure they are safe in the cross walk. One cold day this January while crossing a little girl, Martha slipped on the ice, tearing her rotator cuff. She was scheduled for surgery and went in to get pre-op labs done. That night she was called from the lab and urged to go to the ER, it was there that she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), a rare occurance in adults. That night on January 21, 2014, she was admitted and started chemotherapy the next day. After 20 days in the hospital she was released and on the 21st of February, she was told she had gone into primary remission. Martha continues to get weekly outpatient chemo treatments. Now it is time for a bone marrow transplant. Per the Hematology specialist in Seattle, if she doesn't get the transplant, her Leukemia will return and will not respond to chemotherapy. Martha must move four hours away with a caregiver to live nearthe Seattle Cancer Care Alliance this spring. She will be there for four months while she is prepared for the transplant, while she gets the transplant, and while she is being monitored for Graft verus Host disease. Thoughout this journey, Martha has always remained positive and has had great faith that God will get her through this...even at her darkest hours in the hospital. She is a true inspiration. :)We are raising money to help pay for her living expenses while she is in Seattlefor the transplant, as well as the cost of the transplant. Anything helps :) Prayers are also apprecited. Thank you and God Bless!
