About this campaign

Derek Beyer, a2012 graduate of Mill Valley High School in Shawnee, KS and a very talented musician/drummer,was diagnosed on December 19, 2014 in a “very severe” state with a rare and life threatening disease called Aplastic Anemia. This is ablood disorder in which the body's bone marrow does not make enough new blood cells.

Currently, there are only two forms of treatment for this disease.

When you purchase a shirt you will not only be helping supportDerek but you will also be helping raise awareness, and hopefully finda cure, for this very rare and life threateningdisease.

"Do It Like Derek" is a catchphrase that was created since Derek became sick. The meaning behind it is to stay positive and have hope, no matter what comes your way, just LIKE DEREK! #doitlikederek
Thank you!

Derek Beyer was recently diagnosed, in a severe state, with a very rare and life-threatening disease called Aplastic Anemia.
Aplastic anemia is a condition that occurs when your body stops producing enough new blood cells and your bone marrow is left empty.
It leaves you feeling fatigued and with a higher risk of infections and uncontrolled bleeding.
As a rare and serious condition, AplasticAnemia can develop at any age and for unknown causes and there is currently no cure, only two treatment options.
Only 600-900people per year are diagnosed with this disease.

On December 19. 2014 Derek Beyer was rushed to the ER and then transferred to University Of Kansas Medical Center. They initially believed thatdue to his blood count and other factors that it might be Leukemia, but after many test this was ruled out and the diagnoses became the rare disease, Aplastic Anemia. His body had stopped producing blood. He had been feeling ill and weak for months and his body had finally had enough. Fortunately, he was able to get to the ER in time.

After a bit of a tumultuous start and 5 days as an inpatient, He was released from the The University of Kansas Medical Center in order to spend time with family for Christmas. It was amazing to have him home! Since then he has two other hospital stays.

While in the hospital, he had multiple blood transfusions and continues tohave them weekly along with multiple Doctor appointment per week. Abone marrow transplant (which will require up to about a month as an inpatient) is possible if the immunosuppressant treatment he has already received proves not to be effective. This treatment has come with manyintense side effects. These drugs suppress the activity of the immune cells that are damaging your bone marrow. This helps the bone marrow recover and hopefully generate new blood cells. The downside is that these drugs further weaken your immune system. It's also possible that after you stop taking these drugs, AplasticAnemia may return.

The money raised will be paid into our Pay Pal account that's been set up for Derek's fundraiser'sand will go towardshis accumulating medical bills. This is a great burden to be taking on as a newly established adult. Hopefully soonhe will once again be able to refocus on making his music dreams come true and moving to Nashville,Tn. With God All Things Are Possible!!

The one thing that's made itself very clear to us all in this, is that, GOD IS HERE WITH US, AND HE'S GOT THIS! Philippians 4:13 was scrolling across one of the Dr's computer monitors as they were rolling Derek out into the ambulance, "I can do all things through Christ for he gives me strength"! In all of these very frightening results, there was never even a moment where Derek seemed frightened or afraid and we know that's because God was (and is) with him, every step of the way and it was very evident to not only those with him but to Derek as well, that he felt His Lord and Savior there with Him by his side. We're looking forward to celebrating may more miracles. So, Thank you in advance for your prayers, love and support. It means more to our family and specificallyDerek, than you may ever know.
