All hoodies sold will help fund the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Compton's Cafeteria Riot. SF Pride is our fiscal sponsor.
2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot, which was one of the first known instances of militant trans resistance to oppression. The 1966 Riot predates the better known Stonewall Riots by 3 years and was forgotten for many years. The 2005 documentary “Screaming Queens” brought this historic event back to general attention; the 40th anniversary in 2006 was marked by the unveiling of a plaque at Turk and Taylor, the location of the riot, commemorating the event.
We are raising funds to celebrate the 50th Anniversary and honor the many people, particularly the TWOC, who fought back and helped start the modern LGBT rights movement.
In the event that we raise more than we need for the celebration, all remaining funds will be used to fund work benefiting trans people, particularly trans women of color.
