About this campaign

We are a non-profit sanctuary that focuses on giving an excellent quality of life to birds who are disabled (blind, flightless, etc.) yet healthy and able to live with assistance. We do not believe in euthanasia and give compassionate care to birds who have been hunted by poachers, struck by cars, or befell other tragedies that make them unable to survive in the wild.

The Berkshire Bird Sanctuary and Botanical Gardens was founded by Peter Dubacher in 1972. His "Labor of Love" quickly turned into a lasting haven for injured and unwanted animals, currently hosting over 200 species of birds and is the largest non-profit avian sanctuary in New York State - possibly the nation.

We rely a great deal on public support through awareness so that not only can we maintain the birds and land, but also so that we can continue to have educational programs and utilize these birds who have lost their potential in the wild and give them a new role as educational animals. In the past, and perhaps in the future, we have helped the nation's eagle population by propagating and releasing healthy Golden and Bald Eagles that were born to disabled parents within the sanctuary. In addition we also host a variety of non-indigenous birds such as Mitch, a Steppe Eagle who was shot in Afghanistan and rescued by Army Ranger Scott Hickman and Navy SEAL Greg Wright.

Here, we believe that all life is precious and these birds, who so often become the victims of human errors, spite, or greed, deserve our love, respect, and compassion.
