Alyanna's Special Heart

Alyanna was born October 2014 to Dakota and Anissa in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Hours after her birth she was flown from Carlsbad Medical Center to Lubbock, Tx to have a reconstructive surgery. During preoperational testing it was discovered that Alyanna had a much more severe problem. She was born with a congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome in which the left side of her heart is severely underdeveloped and referred to as having "half a heart." When she was 9 days old she underwent the first of three open heart surgeries. Three and a half weeks later Alyanna was released from the hospital to the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas to await her second open heart surgery. In February of 2015 Alyanna took a turn for the worst and was admitted to the ICU. Two weeks later she underwent her second open heart surgery at four months old. She is currently recovering and on a very exhausting roller coaster ride as she bounces from the nursing floor to the ICU and back. The sudden onset of Alyanna's surgery left expenses to pile up as both parents left work to be at her side.
