Chiari Malformation is a serious neurological disorder where the bottom part of the brain, the cerebellum, descends out of the skull and crowds the spinal cord, putting pressure on both the brain and spine and causing many symptoms. It can strike children and adults and cause crippling headaches, neck pain, balance problems, trouble breathing, numbness and weakness in the limbs, and a host of other problems. To date there has been very little research on Chiari and fundamental questions regarding its underlying cause, diagnosis, and treatment remain unanswered. It is estimated that Chiari affects 300,000 people in the US.

The Conquer Chiari Walk Across America is an annual fundraising and awareness event comprised of a series of local walks held on the same day. In 2013, the event was held at 61 locations (and Iraq), involved more than 11,000 participants, and raised over $568,000.

I myself have Chiari along with my two children, ages 3 and 12yrs old. Along with so many wonderful other people who suffer from Chiari and also those who have children with Chiari. I have to help get the word out about this disorder and will keep doing this until we are all heard.

The 7th annual event will take place on September 20th, 2014 across the US. Our local event will be held at St Cecilia’s Parish, 125 W Whittier St, San Antonio, Texas, 78210. This is our 2nd Annual Conquer Chiari Walk in San Antonio Texas

I am writing to you as a parent of two wonderful children who suffer from a rare condition called Arnold Chiari Malformation. You most likely have never heard of Arnold Chiari Malformation. ACM is rare neurological disorder; where the hind part of the brain, cerebellum, protrudes down out of the skull canal. This compresses the cerebellum and spinal cord together causing many serious and sometimes debilitating symptoms. Chiari can strike children and adults. There is NO CURE to-date.

My daughter is 3 years old and is severely medically complexed. She has undergone a serious high risk surgery called posterior fossa decompression, suboccipital craniectomy and laminectomy. Once that was done; the layer that covers the brain was cut opened, then sutured with a synthetic material to give space for the tonsils. This procedure was performed she was 16 months old. I, myself, was recently diagnosed with Chiari as well. My son and I have not been decompressed.

Chiari has become a huge part of our lives. We, Chiarians, suffer from many symptoms from Chiari; it affects our entire body. Although our lives are tough; we are tougher and continue to smile every day. We want and need to spread awareness and raise money for research. The Conquer Chiari Walk Across America is an annual fundraising and awareness event comprised of a series of walks held on the same day. Conquer Chiari is a 501(c)(3) public charity.
