Team Charlie

I have had Charlie my  DAD (Diabetic Alert Dog) since August 30, 2013. I have had type 1 diabetes for 34 years, since the age of 2. Before receiving Charlie, my oldest daughter felt she would need to stay home instead of going to college to keep me alive on a daily basis, as I was having so many lows that I could no longer feel. My youngest daughter, who is a toddler needs me to be alert and aware, so I can properly care for her. I knew I had to take drastic measures. When I contacted Service Dogs by Warren Retriever's, I had no idea there was a dog who could smell the blood sugar decreasing, and elevating, and stop it from happening. Charlie, is the best thing that could have happened to my diabetic life. He has kept me alive by aggressively alerting me to dangerous low sugars way before they happen. He works better than any diabetic equipment I have tried, and I have tried it all. Although I am still unable to feel my low sugars coming on, my oldest daughter now knows she does not need to worry and can feel good when she does leave for college. Charlie has given her that wonderful feeling of relief. My husband can go to work, without the fear of coming home to the unimaginable. My DAD has been so wonderful that he even alerts other diabetics in public, and can tell me who it is by pointing them out with his head so I can talk to them. Every time this has happened they were a diabetic with a high or low sugar, or hypoglycemic with a low sugar. A low blood sugar can take the life of someone so easily, and has almost done so to me on multiple occasions over the course of years that I've had it. It can cause brain damage, seizures, and many other complications to alter life drastically, including death. High blood sugars cause blindness, nerve damage, kidney failure, amputations, heart complications, stroke, and death only to name a few.
