FILM PROJECT: Don't Date a Girl Who Treks

In October of 2016, Marinel from the Brown Gal Trekker Outdoors blog (www.browngaltrekker.com) wrote a piece dedicated to all women trekkers globally - DON'T DATE A GIRL WHO TREKS. The piece was published on Huffington Post, Dave's Travel Corner and two prominent female focused entities in the outdoors world, WHOA MAG and Women Who Explore. Shortly after publication, Brown Gal Trekker launched the FILM PROJECT: DON'T DATE A GIRL WHO TREKS to further promote the voices of women in the hiking world through film-making that will encompass photos and videos of real women from all walks of life on the mountain trails. In conjunction with the film project, Brown Gal Trekker launched the OUTDOOR WOMEN'S VOICES SERIES to capture the stories of women on the mountain trails. The film project is sponsored by the social enterprise, Peak Explorations, and Brown Gal Trekker blog. Both entities promote women and diversity in the outdoors and the media. Marinel will be working with an award-winning photographer, Bernard Chen, from Timescapes to produce the film. As such, the film requires hiring of professional voice overs, among other standard expenses associated with producing a film. To date, numerous women from various parts of the world have submitted their own photos/videos on the mountain trails, each of whom has a story to share.

Marinel quickly realized from the process that women in the hiking world aspire to have a voice in the outdoors media. Hence, Marinel and Bernard find the endeavor highly relevant and important to outdoors women in general which prompted them to create a film product that will celebrate the diversity of women in the outdoors. Women in the hiking world come in all shapes and backgrounds as opposed to the typical version of female hikers depicted in the current manner of advertising that the outdoors media far too often portray. It's time to show the world a more realistic and accurate portrayal of female hikers/trekkers and celebrate the uniqueness that each of us brings in the spirit of inclusiveness in the outdoors.
