Did you know Satoshi Tajiri, the creator of Pokémon (the most popular, lucrative, and successful video game in world history - second only to Super Mario Bros.) has Autism? Did you know his autistic fixation with bugs and ability to think different are what spawned his idea for Pokémon to begin with? To share and celebrate the ability of Satoshi's Autism (and the ageless joy it's brought to people everywhere), I've created this Don't Diss Ability T-shirt for Autism.
Have you ever wondered why others, maybe even you, refer to someone's difference as a disability, disorder, or dysfunction? Probably not. It's something we never think about, yet off we go everyday to raise awareness and put an end to stigmas and labels...that we use on ourselves.
If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone with a neurodiversity refer to their own situation as a disability or mental illness, I could retire today!
These terms are rarely accurate. So many brilliant minds have improved the world thanks to neurodiversities and the ability to think unlike anyone else. These abilities may come at a struggle and cost, but this is true of anything worthwhile. Just because challenge is involved doesn't make someone disabled.
On the same note, just because certain tasks are harder for some people doesn't mean they can't excel at those or other tasks...sometimes far beyond the ability of anyone else. So why are we letting pessimism drive and leading with the negative? Why not focus on the positive? On the ability!
This message and challenge to ourselves and the world is what Don't Diss Ability is all about! Let's STOP using negative words and labels to describe neurodiversity. For good! All profits from these t-shirt sales go directly toward funding Episode 1 of Little Billy, the world's first and only animated series about life with special needs.
Remember. We're not broken. We're just different.® =)
