Team Blanche was formed by the Mulrenan family in memory of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother,in-law, and just all around wonderful person - Blanche Mulrenan. This year we are fundraising by selling bags that help to spread the message of why it is that we relay. We relay for Hope - for hope that families will not have to suffer loss the way that we did.

38225_451731000254_3398424_njpgIn September of 2011, the Mulrenan family lost it’s matriarch to cancer. Blanche Mulrenan - our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, friend, and so much more - had fought against this terrible disease bravely. But after a tiring fight, she lost her battle. Our family, too large to count, was grieving, all in their own way.

Looking for a way to come together, honor her memory, and find a support system, the Mulrenan family joined Relay for Life Woburn, and formed Team Blanche - a name which she would have hated, but that’s okay. We camped out on Library Field the following May and walked to honor her memory. Her husband, Bill, found people he could connect to. He had cared for her selflessly during her struggle and coming to Relay helped him realize that he wasn’t alone.

For two years, with Bill (or Dad or Grampy), we walked to remember, honor, celebrate Nana Blanche, and fight back against cancer. Last year, at the beginning of May, we lost our patriarch. We walked again at Library Field, grieving the amazing couple that started an enormous, loving, wonderful family of 7 kids, 18 grandkids, and 9 great grandkids, with a growing number of in-laws that are treated as blood, and friends that we will always consider family.

Why does Team Blanche relay? We relay to remember those that we have lost, to come together as a family, to be surrounded by an incredible community that understands our struggle, to fight against this dreadful disease, and for the hope of a world without cancer.
